Have Questions?
Q: What grades are eligable to participate in these programs?
A: Our VG Designers and Gamers afterschool programs are available to all students 5th - 8th grade. Our competitive esports teams are available to all 7th and 8th graders who have maintained a passing GPA and attend tryouts. Our Game Design Electives course is available to all 7th and 8th graders. Our summer camps are available to all incoming 5th graders and up.
Q: Does my child need to attend Gorzycki in order to participate?
A: Aside from our esports teams and electives course, we accept students from any school into our programs. Drop off and pick up will always be at the school's main entrance. Many of our participants come from the Gorzycki feeder elementary schools.
Q: What are the esports teams and how do they differ from the afterschool clubs?
A: Our esports teams are like any other UIL middle school team sport. Our afterschool programs are not team based or competitive in nature.
Just like any other team sport, our esports teams require a strong level of commitement. We meet once a week afterschool, practices and games are on the same day. Competition is through an online gaming platform called PlayVS. Participation in tryouts is mandatory.
Q: What games do the kids play on the esports teams?
A: We try to compete in a few different Middle School games - called leagues. We won't know what games are available though until the schedule is posted. In the past, Gorzycki has competed in Rocket League, Valorant, Chess, Fortnite and Super SmashBros.
Q: Can my child compete in more than one esports league/game?
A: Yes, that is possible, but not guaranteed.
Q: When does the season begin, how long does it last, and what days will it be on?
A: Usually the seasons last for about 2-3 months. We hope to know the Fall schedule by some time in September. Once we have the Fall schedule we'll post it on our website and reach out to parents and students. Most likely, practices and games will take place on Mondays or Fridays. Students should plan to be in room 703 by 4pm, and to stay till 5:30. There are times when games go past 5:30, but it's rare.
Q: Does my child need experience in coding and or game design to participate in the VG Designers Club?
A: No, not at all. We teach them the basics to game design using RPG Maker, which is an intuitive tool to designing role playing games that rely heavily on character development, setting, and plot.
Q: Do you offer scholarships?
A: We do! We want to ensure all students have the oppotunity to participate in our programs. Inclusivity is a big part of what we're trying to do. Click HERE for a form and we'll get back to you with an email shortly.
Q: What kind of games do you have?
A: We have over 300 games! We try to update our inventory as often as possible, ensuring that we have copies of the most popular games out there. The majority of our games are collaborative, multiplayer games. None of our games include blood or excessive violence -- we keep it school appropriate. We also ensure that students are playing games within the tiger esports community and NOT with strangers online -- we've placed restrictions on our PCs to ensure that doesn't happen.
Q: I still have other questions. How can I reach out to you?
A: Shoot us an email at collaborativeedgeyouth@gmail.com. We'll get back to you ASAP!
